More Than Just Concerts!
Each year we ask for charity nominations then the choir vote on which one they would like to be our charity. In 2013 our charity for the year is Leeway.
I would like to nominate Leeway, a local charity providing specialist help, advice and support to adults, children and young people across Norfolk and Suffolk who have or are still experiencing domestic abuse.
Domestic abuse and violence covers physical, sexual, psychological and financial abuse perpetrated by a partner, ex partner, family member, neighbour or other personal relationship.
Domestic abuse can take place in any relationship regardless of age, race, gender, sexual orientation, wealth or lifestyle.
If someone is forced to change behaviour because they are scared of their partner's reaction, it is likely they are being abused.
Leeway services include three refuges in Norfolk providing a place of safety and peace for women and their children, and support them while encouraging them to make their own choices and decisions about their own futures.
Leeway also provide community services for adults and children including specialist services for men who experience domestic abuse. These services provide emotional and practical support for example financial, safety planning, legal issues and welfare rights.
Service users receive support while making the choice of whether to leave and to help do this safely.
Leeway supports over 6000 adults and children every year and this number is on the increase. Money raised within the community would help pay for vital services and a variety of projects including the conversion of ordinary phones into special safety phones, provision of more outreach services to visit women in need and the continued provision of a 24 hour helpline.
All Leeway services are confidential with emphasis on safety of the abused.
